ELK Studios is a Stockholm-based slot developer founded in 2013. As of September 2026, its official catalogue contains more than 150 slots, ranging from compact mobile-first releases to connected series such as Wild Toro, Nitropolis, Cygnus and Pirots.
The studio is known for detailed animation, unusual mathematical models and bonus systems that often give players several ways to enter a feature. Its games are supplied to licensed operators rather than offered directly to players.
From a mobile-first studio to an international supplier

ELK began in central Stockholm with a clear focus on mobile play, at a time when many online slots were still designed primarily for desktop screens. The Lab, released in October 2014, was its first slot and introduced the Betting Strategies interface that later appeared across the portfolio.
Electric Sam followed in December 2014, while Taco Brothers arrived in 2015 and grew into one of the studio’s earliest recurring casts. By 2016, Poltava had earned an EGR Game of the Year nomination, giving ELK industry recognition before the company had built a large catalogue.
The breakthrough came with Wild Toro, which won Game of the Year at the 2017 EGR Operator Awards. ELK says it tested 17 million spins before release, a useful example of the attention it gives to mathematical behaviour as well as artwork and sound.

Growth followed quickly. ELK appeared in the Deloitte Sweden Technology Fast 50 in 2019 and was also ranked among Sweden’s fast-growing DI Gasell companies in 2019 and 2020.
Scientific Games acquired ELK Studios in December 2021, before the parent company adopted the Light & Wonder name in 2022. The acquisition announcement said ELK would continue to develop games independently while gaining wider distribution, particularly in North America.
Licences and regulated markets
ELK is a software supplier, so its regulatory permissions should not be confused with a licence to operate a gambling website. The main licences and registrations associated with the studio cover the following markets:
- Great Britain: ELKAB Studios AB holds active remote Gambling Software and Game Host licences under Gambling Commission account 40844.
- Malta: ELK Studios Malta Limited holds B2B Critical Gaming Supply licence MGA/B2B/605/2018 for Type 1 casino games.
- Romania: ELKAB Studios AB received second-class permissions for specialised gambling software and for platform management and hosting, numbered 821 and 820 respectively, in May 2020.
- Greece: the Hellenic Gaming Commission’s manufacturer register lists ELKAB Studios AB under HGC-000027-MN.
- Sweden: as a supplier to the locally regulated market, ELK operates within Sweden’s gambling-software permit system.
ELK also presents an Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario badge on its official website, reflecting its access to Ontario’s regulated market. Approvals are market-specific, however, so the exact selection of ELK Studios slots can differ between countries and operators.
Popular ELK Studios games and series
Wild Toro remains an important reference point because of its 2017 award and its walking-wild bull, which crosses the reels and can leave extra wilds behind. The character later returned in Wild Toro II, Toro 7s, Book of Toro, Buffalo Toro and other variations.
Cygnus took the studio’s polished presentation in a different direction, using a space setting and feature-driven maths. Its long run of sequels shows how ELK revisits a recognisable game model while changing the bonus structure from one release to the next.
Nitropolis started as a post-apocalyptic slot built around Nitro collections and expanding action, then became a larger story world. ELK developed five clan-focused games for the Battle of Nitropolis sequence and continued the setting through titles such as Nitropolis TV and several animal-led spin-offs.

Pirots combines pirate birds with a collection system instead of conventional paylines. The first game introduced CollectR in 2023, and the series had reached Pirots 5 by July 2026, with each sequel adding new boards, collection goals and bonus events.

Older releases are worth exploring too. Lake’s Five is an early ELK slot with a heist theme, while Katmandu, Katmandu Gold and Katmandu X show how the studio can return to a familiar setting with substantially different mechanics.
X-iter, CollectR and other ELK ideas
X-iter is ELK’s best-known proprietary system. In supported games, it offers up to five predefined modes that may increase the chance of a feature, guarantee a special reel setup or open a bonus round directly for a higher stake.
The price and effect are tailored to each slot, commonly ranging from a small multiple of the normal bet to several hundred times the stake. X-iter is not available in every jurisdiction, and it changes the cost and risk of a round rather than improving the game’s theoretical return by default.
CollectR, introduced with Pirots, replaces normal line or cluster wins with moving collectors. Coloured characters gather matching symbols, and those collections can expand the grid, upgrade values or unlock feature chests as the round develops.
ELK Compete is another distinctive part of the supplier’s platform, although it sits around the games rather than inside their maths. Operators can use the overlay for multiplayer tournaments and individual challenges without rebuilding the underlying slot client.
The common thread is not one reel layout or one volatility level. ELK tends to build a clear theme first, then supports it with bespoke animation and a mathematical model that can sustain several interacting features on a small screen.
What to check before playing
ELK Studios slots vary in RTP, volatility, maximum win and available feature modes, sometimes with more than one configuration supplied to operators. Check the information panel in the version you are playing rather than relying on figures quoted for the same title elsewhere.
It is also worth checking whether X-iter or another paid feature is enabled in your jurisdiction. These modes can make a single round far more expensive, so the multiplier shown beside the option matters as much as the advertised bonus.
